Metro Tech Aviation Graduate Soars to New Heights as Corporate Jet Captain
In 2009, when Justin McMurry joined Metro Tech's Aircraft Maintenance program at Will Rogers World Airport, his goal was clear: to obtain the certifications needed for a prosperous career in Aviation. Little did he anticipate that his educational journey would lead him to earn a pilot's license, become a certified flight instructor, and travel the world.
McMurry enrolled at Metro Tech's Aviation Campus as a recent Deer Creek High School graduate. Alongside the fundamentals of Aircraft Maintenance, McMurry said the program also allowed him to develop essential soft skills.
"I wasn't the best student in high school, but Metro Tech gave me a chance to learn how to be more disciplined," McMurry said. "The program taught me soft skills like responsibility and time management. My instructor taught me about the maintenance aspects of Aviation and the flying aspects as well."
Robert Hensley, McMurry's Aviation Maintenance Instructor, said McMurry's achievements serve as a testament to the diverse array of opportunities awaiting students upon their graduation from Metro Tech.
"Justin was a hard-working student who was always the first to arrive and the last to leave," Hensley said. "With the right dedication, the potential for a thriving career in Aviation knows no bounds, and Metro Tech is a great place to get your start."
Upon completing the program at Metro Tech, McMurry attended Oklahoma City Community College, where he obtained his Associate degree. From there, he enrolled in the University of Oklahoma School of Aviation and graduated in 2015.
After earning his pilot's license, McMurry traveled the globe for two years and lived in Bali as a flight training captain for Indonesian pilots. Following his time in Bali, he returned to Oklahoma to fly jets with luxury private aircraft charters. Today, McMurry serves as a Corporate Jet Captain with Oklahoma Aviation.
"I truly appreciate everything Metro Tech has done for me to ensure my success," Justin said. "If it weren't for them, I may not be where I am now. I can proudly say I am Metro Tech for Life."
