Metro Tech Leaders to Receive Recognition
Metro Technology Centers community leaders will be recognized as two of the 50 Famous Falcons at the 50th Anniversary Millwood High School’s first graduating class. Mike Shelton, Intergovernmental and Community Liaison, and the late Dr. Dennis L. Portis III (posthumously), former Associate Superintendent for Metro Tech, will be honored at the banquet on Friday, May 20.
Shelton was a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, representing District 97 from 2004 to 2016. He graduated from Millwood high school in 1991 and attended Langston University to earn his bachelor’s degree. While at Langston, Shelton became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He later earned a Masters at Webster University in St. Louis. Shelton is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions; he was voted seven times as Legislator of the Year for various local and national organizations.
Portis graduated from Millwood in 1998 and attended Grambling State University and earned bachelor’s degrees in pre-engineering and education. He began his teaching career at Metro Tech in 2003 as a pre-engineering instructor. After becoming passionate about education, he went on to get his Master’s Degree in Education at the University of Central Oklahoma in 2005. He continued his education and received his Ph.D. in Education Administration in 2013.
“We have been fortunate and blessed to have such great Millwood alums in leadership roles over the years,” said Metro Tech Assistant Superintendent David Martin. “Dr. Portis had a gift for mentoring and investing in others’ success. He is greatly missed. Mike has done some incredible work for Oklahoma City over the past two decades and continues to be highly respected among his peers and the community. Their passion for education has helped Metro Tech students shine.”
