Metro Tech to Open Newly Constructed Wellness Center

Metro Tech to Open Newly Constructed Wellness Center

OKLAHOMA CITY – Metro Technology Centers will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly constructed Wellness and Outreach Center at the Springlake Campus on Friday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m. Oklahoma City community members and elected officials are invited to tour the facility and learn more about the health and wellness activities, events and programs the building will offer.

In partnership with Smith and Pickel and Renaissance Architecture, the 10,200 sq. ft facility includes a group fitness exercise and storm shelter, a demonstration kitchen and education classroom, an outdoor covered exercise space and an employee fitness and exercise room.

The project was made possible through the 2019 Community Bond Initiative, and has been long awaited by the Metro Tech Community Outreach and Wellness Department. Since 2009 the department has conducted MetroFIT classes within Metro Tech educational facilities. In 2020, MetroFIT began conducting classes virtually and locally at Eastside Elevation Nutrition and the Pitts Park Recreation Center, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, the department will be utilizing the new center for all MetroFIT classes including Kickboxing, Line Dancing, Swing Dancing, Xtreme Hip-Hop Step, Tai Chi and more. Yoga classes will take place in the covered outdoor space, weather permitting.

Community Outreach and Wellness Director, Valerie McMurry, is excited for the Department to have their own location to continue creating a healthier community in Northeast Oklahoma City.

“We are so thankful for the communities support of this facility. Their vote has created a new venue that will further Metro Tech’s wellness and educational opportunities,” McMurry said. “It’s been a long time coming, and like the Department, this Center will specialize in the wellness of the mind, body and spirit.”

The demonstration kitchen located on the east side of the building overlooks a 50-seat classroom and will offer a variety of health, wellness and nutrition educational opportunities that will be coordinated by the Department and alongside community partners such as the Lynn Institute, ReMerge, LCDA, Integris Health, the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic and more.

“When we speak about wellness I want people to understand what that can include,” McMurry said. “There’s not just physical wellness. There’s nutritional wellness, mental wellness, financial wellness and so much more. We are providing a holistic approach to the overall wellness of the community.”
