STEM Academy FIRST Robotics team places 16th from 61 teams at regional competition

The Metro Tech Mechanical Monsters #5578 placed 16th from 61 teams at the 2017 FIRST Robotics Regional Competition, held at the Cox Convention Center March 22 - 24.

The Mechanical Monsters - comprised of STEM Academy Pre-Engineering high school students - spent months staying after school and working weekends to prepare their robot for competition.

The Mechanical Monsters moved from 48th place last year to 16th this year under the direction of their teachers and mentors.

Special recognition goes to STEM Academy Teachers Mrs. Janet Portwood, Mrs. Shanon Freeman, Mr. Ty Goldsmith; Mary Tran; and team coach and mentor Wade Mendenhall, who volunteered countless hours to push students towards success.

Kamen is an inventor, entrepreneur, and a strong promoter of science, technology, and engineering. He is best known as the inventor of the Segway.
